Jewish Music Days in Szczecin 2022

Experience the fifth Jewish Music Days in Szczecin! On two September evenings, we will return to the National Museum in Szczecin not only to enjoy magnificent sounds, but also to bring back forgotten memories.

Memory is an exceptional value, which defines our humanity, regardless of religion one follows or cultural circle one belongs to. We store pleasant moments of our lives, care for images related to people who are close to us; we recall places where we felty happy. 'Remember, Lord...' may be heard in synagogues and churches all over the world, as a prayer for particular care.

On the other hand, we try hard to forget about everything that is bad. We get rid of unwanted objects, delete painful contacts, do our best to leave thoughts that do not provide us with joy. Condemnation of memory – damnatio memoriae – has been a cruel punishment and a painful process for thousands of years. od tysięcy lat pozostaje straszliwą karą, ale i bolesnym procesem. "He who suffers, remembers", Cicero noted.

This year's Jewish Music Days concerts will be a chance to reflect on memory. How many things are there that we intend to remember? How many have we lost due to oblivion? How do our memories shape who we are as individuals, as groups and as society? How will we be remembered?

Jewish Music Days in Szczecin concerts have been held annually since 2018. The programmes present ethnic, classical and synagogue music whish was heard in our city in the old days, along with new pieces inspired by the past. What music, the musicians and the audience have in common is universal experience known to all of us. Thanks to them, every year we find ourselves among wonderful people who feel and think the same.

I REMEMBER LEJBUSZEWO

The Klezmafon band:

Maciej Strycharczyk – clarinet

Krzyszstof Baranowski – accordion

Walking along the streets of Szczecin and reading publications about memory, we frequently think about the phenomenon of the city the history of which imposed numerous changes in its residentrs' consciousness. What would Jewish instrumetalists a century ago would in their memories? Undoubtedly, cobblestones and tenement houses of Niebuszewo, wide streets of the city centre, lively and multicultural harbour and great ships which would take one to nay place in the world. The echoes of those memories are still heard in the music played in Szczecin: the mood of klezmer music mysteriously fits in the city we know today. And how much do we ourselves remember from the past and the present?

MUSIC OF THE NEW SYNAGOGUE: JAKUB WEISS

Jakub Stefek – organ

Isidoro Abramowicz – cantor

Chamber Choir of Academy of Art in Szczecin

Barbara Halec – director

This time's Music of the New Synagogue concert will consist of psalms and hymns by Jakub Weiss, a nineteenth-century Warsaw cantor. His two collections of songs gained popularity in synagogues of the whole Europe. We came across only one set of signed lyrics in in Hebrew, Polish and German. Their first recording ever is to be released soon. Jakub Weiss wanted very much all those who would reach for his pieces of music "at home and in the synagogue" to recall not only the beauty of Jewish synagogue music, but also such values as peace, brotherhood and mutual understanding. "Go then, my humble pieces, shown to my own soul from holy Inspiration during the moments of enlightment. Give what moves upwards and ennobles souls with the power of the invisible and of the eternal", he wrote in the introduction.
